The Department of English, in collaboration with Research Cell and IPR Committee of Dhempe College of Arts and Science, conducted a One-Day State-Level Workshop on “Citation, Referencing and Bibliography as per MLA 8th Edition” on August 22, 2019, in the Seminar Hall of the college. The workshop was organized with the view of acquainting the students of languages with the skill of conducting research and using MLA 8th Edition stylesheet in in-text citation and bibliography in the project reports. A total of nine colleges from all over Goa were represented by 32 students for this workshop. All the TYBA English students (General and Honours, 35) of Dhempe College also participated in this workshop. Overall 67 students benefitted from the proceedings of this endeavour.
The workshop featured intensive sessions into topics such as Purpose of Research, Formulating Hypothesis, Research Methodology – Designing Aim and Objectives, Conducting Literature Survey, Delineating Limitations, Resourcing Information from different mediums, Avoiding Plagiarism towards Ethical Research, Intellectual Property Rights – Relevance and Rubrics, Word Repositories, Referencing and In-Text Citations and Writing Bibliography. Assistant Professors Ms. Akshata Bhatt and Ms. Palia Pandit from the Department of English, Dhempe College, Former Patent Consultant and presently Visiting faculty for M.Sc. Chemistry Dr. Amol Jadhav and Assistant Professor, Department of Languages and Literature, Goa University, Ms. Nafisa Oliveira served as Resource Persons for various sessions providing learners hands-on insights into the topics chosen.
Speaking at the Inaugural of the Workshop, Principal Dr. Vrinda Borker stressed on the need to conduct research in a systematic manner. Convenor of the Workshop, Ms. Clarinda Dias (In-charge, Dept. of English) and Convenor of Research Cell, Dr. Wendy Manuel (Department of Psychology) were also present on the dais. The Workshop was coordinated by the team at the Department of English helmed by Akshata Bhatt as Coordinator and Ms. Palia Pandit as Co-Coordinator. The event garnered an overwhelmingly positive response from the participants with 80% grading the workshop as ‘Excellent’ on its overall usefulness.
