The Department of Geology was established in June 1963 and was the first of its kind in the state of Goa.
The Department offers a B. Sc. degree in Geology (Honours) and also conductsa value added course in โGeographic Information System (GIS)โ. Teaching in Geology is not confined only to the four walls of the classroom as the students are also trained in the field by conducting geological fieldwork at various places of geological interest in the state of Goa as well as in the other states of India. The geological field work is a mandatory component of the curriculum.
The Department has a well-equipped laboratory and houses a โGeological Museumโ with a massive collection of rocks, minerals and fossil specimens. There is also a department library which has a wide collection of reference books donated by retired faculty members of the department, alumni & well-wishers.
The Department is also the headquarters for the โGeological Society of Goaโ, a state level association of Geologists.
The Department conducts various workshops, seminar, conferences, and guest lectures in order to disseminate latest geological knowledge and give an opportunity to the students to interact with scientists, academicians and industry professionals. OPPORTUNITIES & CAREER IN GEOLOGY
Geology is the study of the Earth. It deals with the materials, processes, systems and resources of the Earth. It is the core discipline of Earth Science and is used in the exploration of minerals, metals and energy resources. A career in Geology is both exciting and demanding. The subject offers job opportunities in various important fields such as Oil explorations and production, Mining Industry, Hydrogeology, Seismology, Volcanology, Marine Geology, Structural Geology and Remote Sensing.
After successful completion of B.Sc. in Geology a student can pursue higher education like M.Sc. (offered at the Goa University and several other Universities in India and abroad) and M.Tech. ( at IIT ) or opt for specialized courses like Petroleum Geology (Pune), Mining Geology (Dhanbad), Gemology (at Mumbai or Jaipur), Remote Sensing (at Dehradun), etc.
Government agencies such as Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) are the largest employers of Geologists in India. In addition to being employed in GSI, Directorate of Mines and Geology, Goa, and Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), our students are also employed in leading Oil producing Multi-National Companies such as Schlumberger, Shell, Baker-Hughes, Reliance, ONGC, etc while others have joined leading mining companies like Vedanta, Sesa Goa, Salgaocars, Chowgules, Dempos, NMDC, CIL, etc. Many are also working in renowned research institutions like National Institute of Oceanography, Department of Science, Technology and Environment (DSTE), National Center for Polar Oceanic Research, and yet others have joined the teaching profession.
