One of the premier departments of Dhempe College, the Department of English strives to make learning of language and literature a meaningful experience. While imparting syllabi recommended by Goa University that ranges from culture studies to criticism, the Department also hosts a variety of clubs and associations to enrich studentsโ experiences. An active Literary Association, Communication Club and Movie Club offer students opportunities to explore their talents. Apart from organizing intra-college activities for students, in 2012-13 the Department organised an intercollegiate literary and media event, โIlluminationsโ. Renowned writers and journalists were invited to interact with students during the course of this event. In 2013-14, the Department organised an ICCR-Sponsored Bridge Course in Language Learning and Enhancement for ICCR scholars from different colleges of Goa. The faculty is actively involved in research and has undertaken Minor Research Projects, presented papers at International and National Conferences and published papers in peer-reviewed journals. In March 2014, the Department organised a Two-Day UGC-Sponsored National Conference entitled, โMapping the Matrix of Contemporary Indian Literature in Englishโ.

Name: Literary Association
Activities: The nodal endeavour of the club is to instill and promote keen and nuanced appreciation of literary art. Under the aegis of Literary Association, events such as โCARPE DIEMโ- the intra-collegiate literary festival, workshops on creativity in spoken and written communication, literary quizzes, critical reading sessions in association with external literary organizations and guest lectures by noted critics and writers are organized.
Name: Movie Club
Activities: The primary focus of the club is to encourage critical thinking in students. By screening syllabus/theme/genre-based movies, the club seeks to introduce finer rubrics of story-telling and narratology to students.
